I have read his book First light many times and feel I got to know him. I spend summers near to Million and always thought I would get to meet him, just by chance as I did not want to bother him, now I wish I had. I shall pay my respects at the church next summer. Now again he can fly. RIP Geoffrey Wellum Sq Ldr

The book opens with Wellum's interview for the Royal Air Force and his training. It then shifts to his participation in the Battle of Britain and to his participation in Operation Pedestal , flying planes to Malta off an aircraft carrier. Excellent book about Geoffrey Wellum joining the Royal Air Force, struggling to become a qualified pilot, and finally being successful by joining a spitfire squadron in time for the Battle of Britain.
